If someone is hacked, it can damage their reputation and cost thousands of dollars in lost advertising revenue. Dale Berry is the owner of an English preschool in Japan. He was the victim of a hacking attack on his Facebook account hacked. Hackers used his account to display fraudulent ads, draining the business of his owner and destroying his reputation.
The hackers first target those who have weak passwords, for example «qwerty» or «password.» They then impersonate a friend to request a code that will reset the password. The hackers then take advantage the security feature that lets users add trusted contacts to their account in the event they forget their password. They can request these trusted friends to provide them with the one-time password to gain access to the account.
Buying stolen login information is another way hackers gain access. Recently, a cache of 26,000,000 Amazon, LinkedIn, and Facebook passwords were discovered for sale on dark web. Many of these passwords were taken by a custom Trojan malware that was able to infect millions of Windows-based computers between the years 2018 and 2020.
Users can stay safe from attacks by constantly checking that the address bar on their browser is Facebook and not another website. Users should use a password combining numbers, letters, and spaces. Never reuse it for another social media or emails accounts. In addition they should monitor their activity notifications regularly. Twitter for instance, sends notifications when users log into Twitter from a new place or device.
